What to look for with Cedar Shake Roof Maintenance

Cedar shake roofs can add so much character to a home but shake roofs also require much more care than most all other types of roofing.    Cedar shake roofs must have  maintenance performed a minimum of every four years and more often as the roof gets up in years.   The things to look for on when inspecting a cedar shake roof are damaged shakes that are exposing the felt paper underlayment.   The buildup of fungi and moss on the roof must be addressed as well.    With proper maintenance, a cedar shake roof can last over 30 years but if it is neglected, some cedar roofs fail before their 15th birthday!       Preventative maintenance is where it's at.

Tile Roof Cleaning

Today we performed a manual cleaning on a large and steep concrete tile roof in the Forest Heights area of Portland Oregon. The roof had very heavy moss and debris. We used brushes and a backpack leaf blower to gently scrub the moss loose from the roof. This is a better option than power washing in most cases. This method is much less messy and power washing always brings the posiblilty of leakage in the roof valleys durring the cleaning. We area ble to get the vast majority of the moss and debris off the roof and then we apply a moss killing treatment to the roof to take care of any residual moss. The roof looks very nice.
